:: Implant Indications ::
An implant is used as an artificial tooth root to support a prosthesis in an edentulous or partially edentulous maxilla. It is an advanced medical technology for the treatment of tooth loss. A titanium implant is implanted in the toothless area of the jawbone. the jawbone fuses with the titanium surface providing a strong anchorage for the implant. The implant functions as a support for the dental prosthesis constructed over it.
:: Patient Records and Selection ::
Any patient with a fully or partially edentulous mandible or maxilla can be considered for this treatment modality provided they are in good general health [refer Indications and Contraindications]
A well-prepared treatment plan is critical for implant success, including but not limited to: i] Complete oral examination ii] Treatment of existing pathologies prior to implant placement iii] Radiographic assessment iv] Study models v] A pre-surgical prosthetic guide using the patient's prosthesis +or natural teeth as a reference so that the implants can be +placed in the most suitable locations during the surgery.
:: Contraindications ::
Implants should not be used with patients who have contraindicating systemic or local diseases including, but not limited to:
LOCAL CONTRAINDICATIONS i] Oral infections and malignancies ii] Active periodontal disease
GENERAL MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS i] Blood dyscrasias ii] Uncontrolled diabetes iii] Hyperthyrodism iv] Renal disease v] Uncontrolled hypertension vi] Liver problems vii] Leukemia viii] Several vascular heart disease ix] Hepatitis x] Any immunosuppressive disorder
RELATIVE MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS i] Tobacco consumption ii] Excessive alcohol consumption iii] Poor oral hygiene iv] Bruxism v] Nail or pencil biting vi] Tongue habits
ANATOMICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS Insufficient ridge dimension to accommodate proper implant placement. Ideal ridge dimension is considered to be 6mm or more.
:: Pre-Surgical Considerations ::
i] Scaling and root planning one to four weeks before surgery. ii] Pre-operative intra-oral and extra-oral disinfection of the surgical site(s) with chlorhexidine or a similar antiseptic. iii] Isolation of the surgical field with sterile drapes and gowns.
